We felt there was a need for a disabled supporters club at Bury because facilities were very basic to say the least. Wheelchairs were situated in no-mans land where the ‘Old boys stand’ once stood a Gigg Lane. With regular meetings and consultation with the club we now have facilities to be proud of.
Bury FC Disabled Supporters Club was formed in September 1993 and has grown over the seasons to now include twenty five wheelchair season ticket holders at Gigg Lane. Our aim is to look after the interests of disabled supporters watching Bury.
We also provide transport to away games as well as booking tickets and places for those who travel independently. Please note though that this is subject to availability as some grounds are not disabled friendly.
Gigg Lane hosts some of the best-disabled facilities in the lower divisions with separate wheelchair enclosures available for home and away fans. Toilet facilities are also available near to all the enclosures.
Thanks to the new and impressive Cemetery end stand being built we can now offer a further 24 spaces bringing the total capacity for wheelchairs to 55. This also gives us a choice of viewing area from either the side of the pitch or from behind the goal and more integration with other supporters.
Gigg Lane currently has space for 6 visually impaired persons, but hopefully we will soon be able to increase this, plus offer a choice of seating area for visually impaired supporters. This situation is currently under review and subject to demand could lead us to provide a better service and equipment.
We have recently launched a magazine called Wheelin ‘n’ Shakin which we are producing 4 times a season. Written by our members for our members it offers quizzes, match reports and a way for our members to express their views and aid their communication skills via print. Also we now have our own web site to provide news and keep supporters up to date, this is also an excellent way to promote our club and offer an advertising medium to local companies who support us.
A good relationship has built up between other disabled supporters clubs and ourselves in particular Stockport County with whom we have held social functions where representatives from Huddersfield and Port Vale were also present.
